Top Places to Visit in South Devon in 2009

An all year round destination, the South Hams, the southernmost tip of South Devon, offers a different holiday experience depending on the time of year you choose. Busier with families during school holidays, those looking for ‘away-from-it-all’ breaks often find the Spring or Autumn the ideal time to visit, whilst re-charging the batteries with a Winter short break is becoming increasingly popular.

Whatever time you choose, there is always plenty happening –if you want it to! The local Tourist Information Centres can provide the latest events information (see our ‘Planning your Stay 2009’ guide for their contact details). An unspoilt, largely rural area, the South Hams offers many places to escape from the pressures of a busy, modern life; from hidden coves, miles of coastal paths and wildlife havens, to expanses of river and sea, perfect for those seeking the quieter pursuits of painting, angling, walking and bird watching.

With a holiday being one of the most anticipated events of the year, planning ahead and pre-booking activities, popular restaurants and special trips can avoid disappointment and help to make your time in the South Hams even more special.

Very useful article for fans of the South Hams - thank you. I would strongly endorse your view of Riverford as a destination. We took two young teenagers with us ("do we have to?") who then had a brilliant time - and the best salad in Devon at the end of the tour! Also agree that The Oyster Shack is worth a visit - but you have to book well in advance in the Summer season. It's worth making time to visit any of the local beaches round there too - some of the best.

If you need accommodation of course there are loads of companies offering self catering, but mycottageholiday.co.uk the holiday cottage review site might give you some insights you don't get from the brochures.

The county is also home to part of England's only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dorset and East Devon Coast, known as the Jurassic Coast for its geology and geographical features.

I travel around the world looking for World Heritage sites and your article is very useful for me. I have never been to this place. Thank you very much!

Riverford farm is a really nice place. I entered my postcode in a few months ago for delivery to Exeter and they didn't do it, but now they do, so no excuses!

You have no idea how much you helped! I was planning to go to South Devon on my new car. The websites you mentioned will make my life much easier.

Is it possible to camp there?
